Etching dated 1967

Slowly it becomes clear what Herman's own world is: the cosmos, the planets. This theme becomes visible for the first time when he makes an etching of a man walking from one planet to the other over a thin thread. Many years later this vision becomes reality, as the American astronauts land on the moon. Many of his etchings and paintings have the cosmos as their subject. Herman peoples his world with suns and planets, but also with female figures.

"I move the female figure - which for me symbolizes the human quest for freedom - around these suns and planets. But sometimes I leave the figures out, and the planets remain in silence."
